Rocca di Castagnoli Chianti Classico Riserva “Poggio a’ Frati” 2018

Rocca di Castagnolis enkeltmarks-riserva fra Poggio a’Frati-marken.

Great sharpness of fruit for the Riserva from Calì family’s estate. Notes of red currant to the nose, then touches of pepper and carob. The drink is marked by compactness and density, with brackish tannins, fruity-spicy return and nice freshness.

Here's a wine that shows a nice jump forward in quality since the last time I tasted it. The certified organic 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio a' Frati (made with 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo and finished in a combination of botte and tonneaux for 18 months) reveals a generous, mid-weight approach. It shows dark concentration and plenty of varietal freshness and a bit of kick or tightness from the tannins. Another few years in the bottle should soften them. The wine offers dimension and length, although its personality feels quite austere. The fruit represents a special selection culled from a 12-hectare site at a cool 450 to 500 meters in elevation.

The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio a'Frati is an attractive, mid-weight wine for the estate. Chushed flowers, tobacco, mint, cinnamon and sweet dried cherry give this perfumed, mid-weight Riserva a good bit of complexity. The 2018 is perhaps a bit diffuse, but it offers plenty of character as well as immediacy.

Captivating and decidedly expressive in the floral imprint it tells of plums, wild violet, hyacinth and lavender. Lots of red berries small ones describe the secondary scene in the distance. Full body, tannins soft with little extraction and an elegant and decidedly modern finish for relaxation and character. The quality of the fruit and the approach to it are beautiful matter.

Bright, slightly lifted aromas of cherries, plums and some blue fruit here. Tight and fine-grained with a flavorful mid-palate. It remains elegant and bright. From organically grown grapes
